4 years, 6 personal laptops, 2 company laptops and I finally decided to merge them all. Bidding goodbye to my current sony vaio, (relax, those are the pics for my auction on ebay) for a price more than I initially bought for. (Actually this is the third time I’m selling a laptop on ebay for a higher price)

PC is out | Mac is in, definitely in

I must be a little late to the mac world, thanks to my PC friendly companies :) . Seeing the techies crunch their code on the beautiful mac book pros in meetings, conferences I had to peek in to see whats in store. I’m not disappointed! As they say, once you switch to the Apple world of products, its very difficult not to be committed to the brand. I’m almost in the verge of buying the IPhone in July from Cingular which would complete my Apple suite for now.

MacBook, OS X 10.4.9 – First impressions: -

- ‘Front Row’ with the bluetooth Remote is just the thing I wanted for ages. I can now control my music, movies, ITunes Radio from anywhere in the room. This is an entertainment center, laptop is taking a nap. Sit back and Enjoy.
- The mighty mouse is a true a beauty. Just one click and it’s actually the whole face of the mouse. Touch sensors on the surface detect where you’ve clicked and respond. You can even squeeze it if you want :) and configure the functions
- The UI is better than any windows you’ve seen (inc Vista). The font type and screen contrast is brilliant.Come,Fall in Love
-
The OS ships with a lot of software.utils.* From photo editors, ITunes, DVD ripper, player to email clients, Its all in there.I just made the above comic strip with a live pic of mine in less than 5 mins; amazing integration of their apps!
- Building it’s core from Unix, you get the same stability and security of a Unix platform. Did you ever realize you never have to purchase a Anti Spyware, Internet Suecurity, AntiVirus for Mac? Think about it, most of these products are made for Windows ;)
- Its blazing fast. I have a 2 Gig, 4MB L2 Cache and 667Mhx Bus speed and the startup, shutdown, sleep times are just so short compared to Windows. Apps load faster, my eclipse IDE is slick n faster.

Actually it gives you a feeling of rebirth. Own it for once. You’ll know

Why Macbook and not Macbook Pro? Well …- Macbook Pro doesnt come in sizes smaller than 15.4″. I really need a 13″ laptop which is the ideal size for my travel and work.
- Pro is almost 60% expensive than macbook just for the .23 Mhz clock speed and higher end graphics card! Yes, both have the same Intel Core 2 Duo processors, I could fit 2GB Ram on both, its got dvd burner, Internal webcam, bluetooth, wifi and everything you can ask for. A mere alluminium form factor with better graphics card wasn’t worth the money for now.
- Intel is releasing it’s new processor this Summer and the next version of Mac Os X – Leopard is around the corner.
- Next 6 months should see significant changes both in hardware and I dont intend to keep this macbook for more than a 8 months; will buy the new macbook pro 13″ version with the above. That def, is worth it.

For an educational discounted Macbook (1199$ instead of 1299$), additional 1GB Ram on Ebay – it turns out to be quite a steal. [Anyone can get an educational discount by going through Apple’s educational store online, just say you are a student in some university and you can buy one, trust me – they don’t even check for laters!) .

As of now, the experience with the mac has been rather interesting, I like the hardware, no doubt but the OS needs some learning/unlearning phase, specially if you’re primarily a Windows guy. Managed to install all my developer Tools – JDK 5, Firefox, eclipse, tomcat, ant, mysql, postgresql and it works great with much better performance. I do miss some great stuff on Windows which still aren’t available on Mac. Surprising that Google never released any of it’s software for the mac yet. Not even google talk, that sucks.

For now, It’s like a honeymoon.

    Apple Statement

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard’s features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we’re sure we’ve made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

  8. altamaiz says:

Ohhhh, that’s simple to answer- I’m CHEAP! Outside of my work laptop, my best PC was $400. :-)

  9. priyatam says:

Hmmm … strange that you still haven’t taken the “plunge”, you’re more of a unix person than I am, I’m sure you would love it. I still haven’t migrated my work related stuff in to my mac though.

  10. altamaiz says:

Wow… I can’t believe you took the plunge!
I went with Ubuntu on my work laptop and have really enjoyed it.
Keep posting about this I’d really like to hear how you feel post-honeymoon. :-)

  12. priyatam says:

ebay has always been good to me :) . managed to buy/sell over 163 items so far with a feedback of 99%.

  13. ruledbythemoon says:

P.P.S. A mouse like that wouldn’t last long in my house. Small hands would take it and I would find it months later hidden away in a toy box ;-p

  14. ruledbythemoon says:

Wow!! Looks like a great machine Priyatam! I must admit I have never laid my hands on anything made by Apple (shock horror!). It seems like you will have fun using it. P.S. Lol @ making such a good profit off Ebay…wonders never cease huh!? :-)

  15. falcon13 says:

    sounds good to me! ;-)

  16. priyatam says:

:) why, other side? I say its the “inside” of computing

  17. falcon13 says:
